P. 60
Step 2. Subtract the tens. Step 3. Subtract the hundreds.
H T O H T O
5 14 5 14
3 6 4 3 6 4
– 1 4 8 – 1 4 8
1 6 2 1 6
5 – 4 = 1 ten 3 – 1 = 2 hundreds
So, 364 – 148 = 216.
regrouping Hundreds to tens
If there are not enough tens for subtraction,
we regroup 1 hundred to 10 tens.
H T O H T O
1 12
2 2 0 2 2 0
2 hundreds 2 tens 1 hundred 12 tens
Example 3. Subtract 173 from 239.
Solution.
Step 1. Subtract the ones. Step 2. Subtract the tens.
H T O H T O
2 3 9 1 13
– 1 7 3 2 3 9
6 – 1 7 3
6 6
9 – 3 = 6 ones 7 tens cannot be subtracted from 3 tens.
So, regroup hundreds and tens.
2 hundreds 3 tens = 1 hundred 13 tens
Now, 13 – 7 = 6 tens.
